A Blackstone River drop in downtown Woonsocket that powered the city's historic textile mills.
Woonsocket Falls is the drop on the Blackstone River that gave the city of Woonsocket, Rhode Island its start. The surrounding river corridor is recognized today by the National Park Service's Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park, which frames the whole watershed's role in early American manufacturing this way: "The Blackstone River powered America's entry into the Age of Industry." Woonsocket Falls Village, the mill settlement that grew up around the falls beginning in the 1820s, is historically documented as having run area textile mills on water channeled from the river, part of a wider pattern of mill villages that spread along the Blackstone after Samuel Slater's pioneering water-powered cotton mill opened downstream at Pawtucket in 1790.
Today the falls sit at the heart of downtown Woonsocket, near Market Square, in a setting shaped as much by its industrial past as by the river itself. At the time of this review, the City of Woonsocket's own website could not be loaded to confirm current public access points, hours, or any posted river notices for this stretch of the Blackstone - check the City of Woonsocket's parks pages and current Rhode Island environmental notices directly before planning a visit, and treat this as an urban river landmark rather than a swimming or wading spot.
